Fruit Smoothie Recipes - Cranberry Sauce Smoothie

I used to hate cranberry sauce because I thought it was only that foul jello-in-a-can that pops into your grandmother’s Piggly Wiggly supermarket aisle around Thanksgiving. Then I saw Alton Brown make cranberry sauce on FoodTV. Wow - looked tasty and I couldn’t believe I had never tried it. I made it a few years ago, loved it, and I have made it every year ever since. With Thanksgiving only a couple of weeks away, we here at Fruit Smoothie Recipes thought we’d try to make an Alton Brown inspired Cranberry Sauce Smoothie.

Fruit Smoothie Recipes - Cranberry Sauce Smoothie

  • 1/2 cup frozen cranberries
  • 1/4 cup orange juice
  • 1/3 cup ginger ale
  • 2 tsp. maple syrup
  • 1 tsp. brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup ice

Blend until smooth. Not-too-shabby. This is a thin drink, but tasty and nicely tart. I can imagine how it might taste using orange sherbet and lime sherbet instead of the OJ and ginger ale. Mmm….

Healthy Snack Recipe tips:

  • use no-sugar added OJ
  • use diet ginger ale (or club soda with a splash of lime juice)
  • use sugar-free maple syrup for the sugars
  • add a tablespoon of fiber

Fruit Smoothie Recipes - the Good Morning Smoothie

5 11 2007

the Good Morning Smoothie

We all know breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and with a good fruit smoothie recipe it also becomes the easiest and healthiest meal of the day. Every morning I have a smoothie for breakfast. It’s a great way to get clean carbs, a protein boost and a quick meal at the most important time of the day. It can also be a great meal to get things you might not get in other meals. I use my morning smoothie to get whole grains and fiber as well as the typical fruit smoothie fair.

the Good Morning Fruit Smoothie Recipe

  • 1/2 cup crushed ice
  • 3/4 cup skim milk
  • 1/4 cup fat-free, plain yogurt
  • 1/2 banana
  • 3oz blueberries
  • 1oz Power Flour (see below)
  • 1 TBSP fiber
  • 2 scoops whey protein

This makes about 28oz - 32oz of smoothie. It’s thick, delicious, nutritious - everything you want a good fruit smoothie recipe to be!

So you are probably wondering what Power Flour is. Well, it’s a concoction I made up to help get whole grains and healthy fats. It is basically a 3:1 ratio of whole, rolled oats (or steel cut oats - both work great) and raw almonds. I grind that up in my coffee grinder and then put it in a sealed glass jar. It really makes the shake thick, but oaks are about the best AM carbs you can get, they are great for lowering cholesterol and for colon health. Almonds have great Omega 3 and 6 fats in them and are perhaps the best nut you can eat.

This is a great shake before a workout or just as your morning meal. Good Morning and Enjoy!

Fruit Smoothie Recipes - Cran-Apple Smoothie

4 11 2007

Why I Love Fruit Smoothies

Quite frankly, fruit smoothies help you put good things in to your body. They help boost the immune systems; they can help us to lose fat or building muscle. I think fruit smoothies are the perfect meal replacement.

The key to healthy living is eating well and eating frequently. Clearly smoothies can help us eat well. They also help me eat frequently. I used to just grab a protein shake throughout the day. That’s not horrible - it’s better than snacking on chips and what not. But protein shakes aren’t whole foods. Even though smoothies are drinks, they contain whole foods. Here is one of my favorite mid-day smoothie recipes.

Cran-Apple Fruit Smoothie Recipe

  • 1/2 apple
  • 1/2 cup cranberries
  • 1/4 cup ice
  • 1/4 cup plain fat-free yogurt
  • 1/2 cup skim-milk
  • 2 scoops whey protein

Throw all that in a blender for a minute or two, and BLAMO! You’ve got yourself a great mid-day energy boost. And if you can’t make it at work you can make it at home and put it in a 20 oz cup or shaker-bottle for easy storage to work. Enjoy one on me!

2 11 2007

So what do you do with that left-over Jack-o-Lantern now that Halloween has passed us by? Well, maybe not this, but you get the idea. With the holidays rapidly approaching, here’s a great twist on the seasonal flavors. Have a pumpkin pie for dessert, but have a pumpkin pie fruit smoothie with this delicious fruit smoothie recipe!

Pumpkin Fruit Smoothie Recipe (modified from original posted on FamilyFun.com)

Ingredients

  • 1oz. canned pumpkin
  • 1/4 cup milk or vanilla yogurt
  • small pinch of cinnamon
  • smaller pinch of nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp. brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup (crushed) ice cubes

Directions

  1. Combine ingredients in blender and puree until smooth.
  2. Pour the smoothie into glass (this fruit smoothie is rich) and garnish with a dollop of vanilla yogurt or whipped topping.
  3. For a fun touch, add another pinch of cinnamon or a few colored sprinkles
  4. Serves 1.

To make this fruit smoothie recipe healthier, use skim milk rather and leave off the garnish (or garnish with an extra pinch of cinnamon - it’s good for you!). You could also ad a scoop of your favorite protein powder as a boost.
